🚧 No More Dead Ends: Design Your Art Website With Purpose!

7 MINUTE READ
LAST UPDATED: MARCH 2025

Your art website isn’t just a digital portfolio - it’s a tool to guide visitors toward taking action. But if your site has "dead ends" - pages that don’t lead anywhere - you could be losing potential buyers.

Let’s break down how to structure your site so that every page has a purpose.

Define Your Website’s Main Goal.

Before anything else, ask yourself: What’s the #1 thing I want visitors to do?

For most artists, that goal is something like:
✅ Sell Art
✅ Get Commission Inquiries
✅ Grow an Email List

This main goal will shape everything on your site.

Create Clear Calls to Action (CTAs).

Every page should gently nudge visitors toward the next step. You’ll want:

1️⃣ A Primary CTA – This is the main action you want visitors to take (e.g., Shop Art, Request a Commission).

2️⃣One or More Secondary CTAs – These are for visitors who aren’t ready to take your main action yet but might be in the future (e.g., Join My Email List, Browse My Portfolio, Follow Me on Instagram, Download “Original Art Buyer’s Guide”).

Not everyone will buy on their first visit, but you can still give everyone a reason to stay connected!

Map Out Your Website’s Flow.

Think of your website like a guided path - not a random collection of pages. When you plan your sitemap, be intentional about where each page leads.

For example:

  • Homepage → Browse Available Art → Store Page → Shop Now

  • Portfolio page → View Art Details → Contact for Inquiry

  • Artist Bio → Learn More About My Process → Join My Email List

Every page should direct visitors somewhere.

Outlaw “Dead End” Pages.

A dead-end page is one where visitors finish reading but don’t know what to do next.

Even your Artist Bio page (a very common dead end page amongst artists) should have a clear next step:
✅ Check Out My Portfolio
✅ Shop My Latest Collection
✅ Stay In the Loop - Subscribe To My Newsletter

If visitors get stuck without a next step, they’ll leave - and you’ve worked too hard to bring them to your site for that to happen!

Design Your Art Website With Purpose!

Your website should do more than showcase your art - it should drive action. If visitors are getting stuck with no clear next step, you’re missing out on sales and connections.
